Balloon Angioplasty: Angioplasty, also known as balloon angioplasty and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, is a minimally invasive, endovascular procedure to widen narrowed or obstructed arteries or veins, typically to treat arterial atherosclerosis. By keeping the vessel open, the stent helps to improve blood flow to the heart muscle and reduce the pain of angina. Stent procedures are usually used along withballoon angioplasty. In fact, about 80% of patients who have balloon angioplasty will have a stent placed as well. Balloon angioplasty is done in the catheterization laboratory (“cath lab”). The doctor injects a special dye through a small, thin tube called a catheter into your bloodstream. ... The balloon is inflated to flatten the plaque against the wall of the artery, opening the artery and restoring blood flow. Recovery from angioplasty and stenting is typically brief. Discharge from the hospital is usually 12 to 24 hours after the catheter is removed. Many patients are able to return to work within a few days to a week after a procedure. Bare-metal stents reduce the chance of restenosis to about 15 percent, and the use of drug-eluting stents reduces the risk to less than 10 percent. Blood clots. Blood clots can form within stents even after the procedure. These clots can close the artery, causing a heart attack. Risks Related to Stents. About 1–2 percent of people who have stented arteries develop a blood clot at the stent site. Blood clots can cause a heart attack, stroke, or other serious problems. The risk of blood clots is greatest during the first few months after the stent is placed in the artery. Stents can aid in the reduction of recurrent blockage or narrowing after an angioplasty procedure. Once the stent is implanted, it will remain in your arterypermanently. A coronary stent is a tiny, expandable mesh tube made of medical-grade stainless steel or cobalt alloy metal. We are known as “Centre for Excellence in Cardiology”.
